David Wright, 74, of Gainsborough Drive, Lowestoft, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision on the A12 Yarmouth Road and was later pronounced dead at the James Paget University Hospital at Gorleston.

A woman in her 70s, who was also injured in the collision, was taken by ambulance to the James Paget where, police say, she remains in a critical condition.

Emergency teams were called to the scene, near the Foxburrow pub-restaurant Lowestoft, at just before 9pm, following a report that two pedestrians had been in collision with a blue Renault Megane car.

Three other people who were crossing the road – a man and two children – were unharmed.

A 27-year-old woman from the Lowestoft area, who was driving the Megane, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving in connection with the incident and she has now been released on police bail. She is due to return to the Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre on April 7, pending further inquiries.

Witnesses to the collision are asked to call Sergeant Julian Ditcham at Suffolk police on 101.
