A toddler had a lucky escape after an elderly driver crashed into the window of the cafe where his family was having lunch.

One-year-old Jenson Lusher, from Gooderstone, was in a high chair when the vehicle reversed into the Waitrose supermarket in Swaffham at about 12.35pm today, Wednesday February 6.

His great aunt Vivianne Trorey said: “I heard a bang and then the revving of an engine. I then saw a red car hurtling backwards towards the window.

“I grabbed Jenson’s high chair and pulled him across the room. A man sitting at the next table jumped up and walked away.

“The Ford Ka then hit a bench just outside the window and crashed into it. The staff of Waitrose ran out to help the lady who was shocked but was eventually able to walk away from the incident.”

She added that Jenson took the drama in his stride, and was more interested in the police cars and fire engines.

Another witness, who gave his name as Craig, said: “The old lady reversed her car a some speed into the window, crushing a bench outside and ramming into the trolley park. Given how close she was to the entrance it is a miracle no-one was seriously hurt.”

Police said the driver, who was believed to be in her 80s, suffered minor injuries, and the window was slightly damaged.

A Waitrose spokesman said: “Our first aiders immediately attended to the driver, who is understandably shaken, and called the emergency services. We’re assessing the damage but the café window is intact and safe.”

He added that the café and shop were both open.
