Update: Man bailed after incident at Norwich flat attended by police negotiators

Police were called to the flat in Trafalgar Street, Norwich at 3.20pm to reports of a man in a distressed state.

The man, aged in his 20s, was refusing to leave the premises, making threats and causing damage.

Neighbour Pauline Statham, 81, said she first noticed a police riot van by her garden hedge, and then saw around four squad cars.

'They were shouting up to him from the green but I couldn't hear what they were saying,' she said.

She added officers had what appeared to be a battering ram, but she did not see if it was used.

Mrs Statham said she had lived in the street for more than 40 years and could not remember another incident like it.

The block of flats is at the end of Trafalgar Street, by a green and a small group of shops including a hair salon and a Chinese takeaway.

A police spokesman said: 'No-one else was in the property and there was no risk to the wider community.

'Negotiators and a police dog unit were among the officers in attendance to assist in resolving the situation peacefully.'

The building was cordoned off for a period of time in the interests of public safety.

The matter was brought to a peaceful conclusion at around 7.30pm when the man was arrested.

The man is due to answer bail at Wymondham Police Investigation Centre on May 29.
