A man who died following a single-vehicle collision in Halesworth yesterday has been named by police.

John Veitch, 88, from Southwold was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were called at about 3.10pm following reports that a blue Volvo had collided with the former Hawk Inn building in Bridge Street.

Three fire crews and the ambulance service were also called to the scene but the single occupant of the car, a man aged in his eighties, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Valerie Large, who runs Valerie’s clothing store from part of the Hawk Inn building, was unable to open her business today but plans to reopen tomorrow.

She said: “The building is made up of four units. The end of the building where the car hit is residential.

“My shop has got minimal damage but the effects of the bang has put my door out of alignment and there are a few minor cracks.

“It would have been very traumatic if someone was in the shop. Luckily I am closed on Thursdays.”

A structural engineer was called to the scene and remained at the site until 9.30pm making the building safe.

It is understood that there were no reports of people being injured within the other properties.

Staff at Moutters Hair Design, based behind the Hawk Inn building, were forced to close up early yesterday and evacuate, but reopened this morning as normal.

Owner Claire Aldous said: “Our thoughts go out to the poor gentleman and his family.

“The emergency services were fantastic. They arrived very quickly and got things under control.”

Bridge Street was closed in both directions for several hours, but reopened last night at about 10pm.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle which came from the direction of Quay Street and New Cut in Halesworth.

Calls should be made to PC Jon Doran at the Roads Policing and Firearms Operations Unit on 101.
