Heroic bank staff, including two slightly injured by armed raiders yesterday, were back at work in Aylsham this morning.

A spokesman for Barclays Bank said all the staff had turned up ready to open the Market Place branch at 9.30am, as usual, despite their terrifying ordeal yesterday afternoon when four balaclava-wearing raiders, one wielding a sledgehammer, burst in and demanded cash.

'They are shaken up but they are back at work,' said a Barclays spokesman. 'They are very professional and want to serve their customers. It was a very nasty incident.'

Police are appealing for anyone with information on get-away vehicles used during the attempted robbery.

Four men burst their way into the back of Barclays Bank, on Market Place, at about 2.20pm.

They fled empty handed a few minutes later and police believe a silver Vauxhall Astra abandoned and torched half a mile away may have been their first get-away car.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who saw the car fire in Hungate Street, opposite John of Gaunt Infant and Nursery School. It was reported shortly before 2.30pm.

Detective Sergeant Graeme Talbot, from Great Yarmouth CID, said: 'We believe they then swapped to another unknown vehicle and left the area. I want to speak to anyone who witnessed the Astra being abandoned and may have information on the next vehicle used by the group to leave Aylsham.'

No money was taken, but two members of staff suffered minor injuries after being assaulted.
