Update: Emergency over as RAF Mildenhall “suspicious package” found to be “non-hazardous”

A potential emergency has ended at RAF Mildenhall after a “suspicious package” at the post office was found to be non-hazardous.

A US Air Force spokesman said the package was found at 1pm and was being handled by the RAF Mildenhall Fire Department.

Almost seven hours later, at 7.45pm, base personnel determined that it was safe.

The spokesman said: “After a joint effort from the 100th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department, the 100th Security Forces Squadron, the Ministry of Defence police, the 48th Medical Group and the RAF Lakenheath Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, the scene was cleared.

“There were no injuries. The areas that were affected by this incident have re-opened and are operating according to their normal business hours.”

While the emergency was ongoing, personnel were told to avoid the road leading to Heritage Park, while the post office, the bowling centre, The Exchange (including the BXtra, the food court and all vendors) the gas station and Heritage Park were.
