University of East Anglia students have raised more than £10,000 by taking part in this year’s Pimp My Barrow event.

The annual event, organised by the Union of UEA Students, sees students decorate wheelbarrows and take a tour of the city. This year about 1,800 students took part in the fundraiser for Big C, and a cheque for £10,428.71 has been presented to the cancer charity. The presentation involved the Union, Big C, and UEA RAG (Raising and Giving) Society.

Lee Walker, Big C community fundraiser, said: “We would like to thank Lynne Simpkin and the Student Union for continuing to support Big C, by organising and undertaking this event...The imagination and work that went into creating the barrows by the students was phenomenal.”

Stephen Anderson, UEA RAG president, added: “This is a great event that has created a fantastic legacy of UEA students helping to raise significant amounts of money for charity.”

Pimp My Barrow was devised in 2007 by former students Paul Wheeler and Tom Tapper and has raised nearly £50,000.

Tom said: “I’m absolutely amazed that Pimp My Barrow has continued to grow, year on year, and now in the hands of the Union of UEA Students has managed to raise nearly £50,000 for an incredibly important local charity.”
