Suffolk Fire and Rescue crews were called at 1.11am to the blaze at a terraced house in Stanley Street, and spent almost two hours tackling the flames.

Two crews from south Lowestoft were joined by a crew each from north Lowestoft and Gorleston, and worked to put out the flames shortly before 3.10am, with the first fire crew on the scene within six-and-a-half minutes of the call.

Three ambulance crews were sent to the scene along with an ambulance officer. They treated two patients before taking them to the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston.

A spokeswoman from the fire service said the two people, both believed to be aged over 50, were in a very serious condition.

It is understood they were the only people in the house at the time.

A full investigation is due to begin at 9am, but it is not thought to be suspicious at this stage.
