Rail commuters on the East Suffolk line between Ipswich and Lowestoft are facing a second day of disruption after services were suspended.
Engineers are currently working to clear rail lines of fallen trees and repair damage to overhead wires after yesterday’s storm, which is considered to be the worst for more than a decade for parts Suffolk, continues to cause problems.
With commuters facing more travel chaos today, train operator Greater Anglia warned passengers that services running across its network may be cancelled or delayed at short notice.
Commuters will also have no replacement buses between Ipswich and Lowestoft as the line is suspended.
A spokesman for Greater Anglia said: “The East Suffolk line is still encountering problems with trees at Saxmundham and Halesworth. Network Rail engineers are hoping to clear them by this evening.
“We are advising customers not to attempt to travel and to check our website and twitter feed for up to the minute information. We will return a service as quickly as possible once we have been given the all clear,” the spokesman added.
“Unfortunately we are still experiencing some severe problems in certain areas due to the damage to overhead power cables and fallen trees caused by yesterday’s storm. Network Rail engineers have been working throughout the night but have been unable to clear all the damage.”
The spokesman added customers are strongly advised to check updates before they travel. Currently services between Norwich and Ipswich to Manningtree in either directions are not running. A rail shuttle is running from Manningtree to Colchester for connections to Liverpool Street.
Customers are advised that Greater Anglia tickets will be valid for a service from Norwich to Cambridge and from Ipswich to Cambridge connecting with First Capital Connect services from Cambridge to Kings Cross.
Bus provider, First, is accepting Greater Anglia tickets between Felixstowe and Ipswich and between Saxmundham, Woodbridge and Ipswich. Train tickets will also be valid for bus services between Harwich Town to Manningtree.
Full services are running at Colchester and Clacton. With services between Norwich and Cambridge, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Sheringham and between Ipswich and Cambridge also running.
