A trio of triumphant walkers has returned after raising more than £1,000 for a Royal British Legion care home in Cromer.

Andreas Yiasimi, 53, Keith Broom, 61, and Samantha Gray, 22, trekked 66 miles from Sandringham House back to the legion’s Halsey House care home.

Mr Yiasimi, North Norfolk District Councillor and part of long-standing family-run restaurant Constantia Cottage in East Runton, said he was emotional after the three-day walk.

He said: “We are really tired at the moment but what a fine effort it was.

“I was reduced to baby steps on the second day but Samantha and Keith remained loyal and inspiring right the way through it and I was so determined to carry on. On the third day I prayed really hard and it was OK and we did it.”

They returned to Cromer at about 1.30pm on Tuesday, when they laid poppies on the town’s war memorial before heading to Halsey House where they were greeted with a thank you speech from residents, many of whom are veterans.

Mr Yiasimi said: “After what they have done for us our walk was a speck in the ocean. These people have sacrificed more than we have done. It was an absolute pleasure.”

Mr Broom said Gresham’s School, Holt, supplied the walkers with a minibus to transport them to and from start and end points each walking day.

The three raised money for the home’s amenities fund which pays for trips, treats and outings.

But the most urgent need was for a new minibus, costing at least £50,000, to replace the current one which repeatedly broke down, according to Mr Broom, a volunteer at the home.
