It was a popular afternoon event which all ages joined together for a slice of homemade cake, a cup of tea and a leisurely dance around the floor.

And now two friends from Halesworth are hoping to bring back the tradition of the tea dance.

Sandy Camp and Kelly Parker have joined together to start the new sessions and hope to bring all generations together to show off their dancing skills while enjoying afternoon tea.

Ms Parker, 29, said: “Vintage is so big at the moment and this is something for the whole community to enjoy. It’s a small village and it’s about bringing people together especially as people don’t want to venture out so much in the winter.”

The pair met five years ago when they both worked at Micropress in the town and although Kelly is still there, Sandy left to set up her business.

Mrs Camp, 55, and her husband serve a two-course meal to around 40 pensioners every day and she will be using her skills to make a selection of cakes for the dance.

She said: “It was just something I kept thinking about really because I serve the elderly with hot meals and Kelly and I chatted about it and said what a lovely event it would be.

“Neither of us dance, but that’s no reason not to do it. We’re not aware of anyone else doing this close by and we are hoping for a warm response.”

The friends have enlisted the help of seasoned tea dancer Mary Lawrence who takes classes in Darsham and will be providing the music for the sessions.

Mrs Camp added: “It’s going to take us to a time of simplicity, there’s something so comforting about it. We want to create a lovely atmosphere and if you are enjoying a piece of Victoria sponge doing it, then every better.”

The dances will take place on the first Saturday of each month between 2-4.30pm at Holton Village Hall.

The first launches on Saturday, February 16.

Tickets are £5 in advance or £6 on the door and can be purchased from Edwards Restaurant in Halesworth. Vintage dress is optional.
