Top English folk singer Martin Carthy appears in north Norfolk this weekend - his first gig since picking up a prestigious lifetime achievement award at last week’s BBC Radio Two Folk Awards.

Martin, a leading folk revival singer-guitarist for more than 50 years, is headlining the main concert of the Walter Pardon Centenary Festival at The Atrium, North Walsham, on Saturday night.

Martin and his wife Norma, of the famous Yorkshire singing family The Watersons, became friends with Walter, of Knapton, in the 1970s.

Walter was discovered, aged 59, to be not only a fine traditional singer but also to have a repertoire of 150 songs - some of them not recorded before.

Martin and Norma not only visited Walter at his Knapton cottage but also went with him in 1976 when a group of English folk singers visited America for the bicentennial celebrations.

After Walter died in 1996 Martin and Norma sang at his funeral held at Swafield Church.

As well as the music festival this weekend, a gathering to mark Walter’s centenary is to be held at his graveside on Sunday at 11am.

It will be led by Walter’s nephew, the Rev Roger Dixon, formerly of Knapton, who helped Walter’s discovery in the mid 1970s.
