The seeds have been sewn for the future of a new community gardening project on the edge of Norwich.

The scheme offers people the chance to grow plants and vegetables in two large greenhouses in Sprowston. It is hoped that it will encourage more people to get into gardening and also help reduce social isolation in the area.

Unlike renting out an allotment space, the Sprowston Grow Your Community Network project is free to join and easy to manage.

Mike Ellard, lead volunteer, said: 'With this you are not given a great big patch of land, which can be quite daunting.

'Instead you will be able to grow a few tomato plants, peppers or aubergines for yourself, and other people will help look after them.

People will be able to visit the greenhouses, at the Sprowston Community Hub on Aslake Close, at any time during the week.

It is open to people of any age and any ability, with Mr Ellard offering to provide advice to any budding gardeners when he is around.

They will have the chance to grow a range of plants and vegetables for community or personal use.

Mr Ellard, 69, said: 'I think it is a good way of getting people together and you don't have to be a gardener to get involved. These greenhouses are a huge asset and we are lucky to have them.'

The project has been set up by Broadland District Council and has so far only been launched in Sprowston.

A spokesperson said: 'It is to get people who are isolated to join the club and make some new friends and take up a new hobby. This is the first one we have done, but we will see how successful it is and see if other similar projects can happen.'

People wishing to find out more can visit the greenhouses on Wednesday 17 from 2pm to 4pm. Or email growyourcommunity@broadland.gov.uk or call 01603 430138.
