Strattons Hotel and CoCoes Cafe are set to be the ideal place to celebrate a happy unbirthday this weekend.
Local food lovers heading along to the wonderland that is Swaffham can join a white rabbit, a doormouse and even Alice herself for a posh high tea with a magical twist.
This Sunday’s Mad Hatter’s Tea Party hopes to combine a little bit of a fun with some seriously tasty Norfolk produce as part of the EDP Adnams Norfolk Food and Drink Festival, in association with Norfolk County Council.
The party has been organised under the banner of the Brecks Food and Drinks Festival, a key part of the county-wide celebrations.
The grounds of Strattons Hotel and CoCoes Cafe are set to be transformed into a fairytale Wonderland with teapots scattered everywhere, candelabras adorning the tables and staff dressed up as characters from the Lewis Carroll story. “It’s a really over-the-top kind of thing,” says Vanessa Scott, owner of Strattons and one of this year’s Norfolk Food and Drink Festival patrons.
“Hopefully it will do the same thing as the pop-up restaurant we held last year and will stage again later this month. People were delighted we had done something so different and it makes them instantly talk to each other.
“The more unusual, the better, I think, the atmosphere will get. We’re going to have people playing music as well.”
The Strattons owner and executive chef says she hopes the event will attract a wide variety of people from grandparents with their grandchildren to friends looking to spend a nice afternoon together.
“The whole idea is that it’s very inclusive,” she says. “If you want to come and bring your dog with you, that’s fine. We want a really good mix.”
The high tea, which will be served in boxes, will show off some of the best Brecks produce and its producers.
“It’s a bit like having a lucky bag as a child,” says Vanessa.
Masterchef finalist Tim Kinnaird is set to make a blueberry macaron, specially for the Brecks celebrations, while a selection of cakes and sandwiches with include raspberry bakewell, chocolate and raspberry brownie, rye bread with smoked salmon, egg and cress sandwiches, and cheese and walnut scones.
While it may always be time for tea in Wonderland, organisers of this particular Mad Hatter’s Tea Party are a little more limited.
The party, which aims to cater for about 60 people, is set to take place on Sunday from 3pm.
Places must be booked in advance and tickets cost £15. To book, or for more information, call 01760 725605.
