One of three fire engines sent to rescue seagull in Norwich

Three fire engines were sent to rescue a seagull stuck in a tree in Norwich yesterday afternoon.
The distressed bird had got trapped in twigs in a tree near Norwich Market in Gentleman’s Walk.
The RSPCA alerted Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service just after 3pm yesterday (Wednesday). Firefighters used an aerial platform ladder to free the bird.
The seagull was taken into the care of the RSPCA.
Stefan Rider, incident commander, said: “We sent one fire engine out then because of the location and for safety, we had to call out the aerial platform ladder. The third fire engine is for the remainder of the crew to support the aerial platform ladder.
“We share funding with the RSPCA and have an agreement that they will only call us if they are confident that an animal needs our assistance.”
Supporters of Scottish champions Celtic are in Norwich ahead of the Adam Drury testimonial game tonight.

Previous comment withdrawn:- “Easy to pluck as a pheasant, but a bit salty when cooked”. Try this then “Sing a song of sixpence..a pocket full of rye... 4 and twenty blackbirds. ..baked in a pie”. This is far too controversial to be published.

Why was my comment taken down by the moderator. It was not offensive to anyone and I thought this was a deomcratic society. Just because I am against cruelty to animals is that a case for me being banned. Blood sport is a crime.

Hello is that the Citizen`s Advice? I have just seen person on Gentleman's Walk disturbing local people and traders with loud poorly recorded music, badly timed body movements a complete lack of taste, no apparent self consciousness with his hand stuffed up a Seagull. There are several perplexed children gathered round. Should I call the NSPCC the Army or the Arts Council?!

I'm with Solomon on this one; the Puppet Man's shaking action on the branch would do the trick nicely and if it didn't come down you could threaten it with having to endure his 'act'.

I needed to smile today…“….the remainder of the crew to support the aerial platform ladder.” Come on you aerial platform ladder. Let’s be having you…… Did they stand around cheering support?

Norwich will always be the laughing stock of the county because we allow these things to happen without question. As for the RSPCA they decided to prosecute, for unecessary cruelty, a man in Australia who was being consumed by a shark for insering his thumb in the sharks eye socket to release him... Need we say more?

Please leave Dave Perry (Puppet Man as he's known) out of this, he's a close personal friend of mine and mothers. Thank you.

Yep it was on the Vine show. Listen on BBC iplayer to the comment from anonymous Norwich fire fighter at about 12 57pm last night they rescued a fox . but that was not all. Norfolk fire fighters turn out for more animal rescues than they do car accidents. In fact they only turn out to car accidents if requested by the Police or Ambulance service

So If you call the ambulance service and fire service to release an obviously trapped person they will have to wait untill the other services asses it. WHAT? And as for the Guy from PACT who implied an ant has the same right to life as a human, what can I say?

On the December 24, 2011 it was reported that firefighters have been called to rescue more than 400 animals in Norfolk over the past three years and that and Roy Harold, assistant chief fire officer for Norfolk, revealed that the forces response to animal rescues was under review. Do we take it from this recent incident that the review is still on going ? If so may I suggest they get on with it pronto as they are fast becoming total laughing stock.

The irony that there's another article reporting how there will be more blazes due to the 'tough times' that we are all in and how it will stretch the fire services resources ... They do a sterling job and save lives, but there is no need to send three fire engines to rescue one flying vermin!

This made me chuckle how the hell can 3 fire engines be sent out to rescue a pigeon being an 'emergency' and then some complete tool writing into the evening news last week on the topic of charging people more for failing to attend hospital appts, well sometimes people are late for appts because of road crashe happening and fire engines 'too busy' to attend! Also can someone please tel me HOW THE HELL IS FALLING OFF A HORSE OR A CLIFF NOT AN EMERGENCY!!?? I hope that guy is reading this too

don't give your support to animal charities such as the RSPCA, there are plenty of local hospices, cancer charities that need money

Hello ,is that the RSPCA, I have an emergency. I have seen a council sponsored employee deliberately harming a furry animal. The poison used has caused the creature to suffer from internal bleeding over a number of days. The victim is currently in a deep drain on the dual carriageway of the A11 suffering terribly and looking unwell. Could you please arrange for the fire brigade to come out and rescue it, the police to close the road and the air ambulance to transfer it to the vet. Please also prepare the legal paper work in order to prosecute the Council`s vermin control dept for causing unnecessary cruelty to animals.

This is just pathetic! I have reported to the RSPCA critically injured deer and horses that have been neglected- and I know about horses as I used to have 2; AND THE RSPCA ARE NOTR INTERESTED UNLESS THERE IS A CHANCE OF PROSECUTION OR POSITIVE PUBLICITY FOR THEM. NO DOUBT MY POST HERE WILL NOT BE PUBLISHED; AS IT SLATES THE RSPCA. NO BIAS THEN EASTERN EVENING NEWS!!

This is the same RSPCA that daresn't go after those ( and everyone know who) who leave poor old piebald horses tied up on scraps of grass with no water in the summer.

Share funding with the RSPCA? How does that work. That's it, I am now convinced the world has gone mad. 3 fire engines? A pest controller with an air rifle and a telescopic pole would have done the job. I will be enquiring under the freedom of information act how much that cost the tax payer. Would the RSPCA be willing to clean up the highly corrosive seagull guano covering the market and public buildings in exchange for rescuing this animal. Are they aware that the herring gulls that are increasing in Norwich are carrying and spreading highly drug-resistant superbug bacteria.
