Quick-thinking gym staff have been praised for saving the life of a man who suffered a heart attack at a Downham Market leisure centre today.

The man, who was in his 50s, collapsed at the Bexwell Road centre at around 1.30pm and was treated by staff at the gym, who used a defibrillator to resuscitate him.

A team from Magpas Helimedix then anaesthetised the man and flew him to Addenbrooke’s Hospital. On arrival his condition was described as serious but stable.

Magpas doctor Ali Tompkins said: “This man would not have survived if it wasn’t for the quick actions of staff on the premises.

“This incident highlights how important first aid skills really are. We wish our patient a swift recovery.”

Teams from the East of England Ambulance Service also attended the scene.
