The suspects, both women, parked a van next to the entrance of First Furnishings Superstore in Baker Street at 3.15pm on Friday, picked up a £500 mattress and dragged it out the door without paying.

The store’s managing director Ian Howkins said: “We commend their choice, it is a great quality mattress and they are sure to have had a good night’s sleep, but we must insist they pay for it.”

Store supervisor Kelvyn Foster said staff checked the shop’s CCTV when none of the staff could account for the missing mattress.

He said passers-by, who might have seen theft in progress, would not have suspected it was anything other than a customer collecting a purchase.

“They were clearly unaware of the CCTV covering the foyer and another covering the car park,” he said.

A spokesman for Norfolk police said: “Officers would like to speak to two women seen in the area who might be able to help with enquiries.”

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call police on 101.
