Thetford's supermarket war is set to return next week as proposals for two new foodstores are brought back before planning officials.

As reported in the Eastern Daily Press, Breckland Council's planning committee was asked to consider two separate planning applications - one for an Asda store on the former Tulip industrial estate in London Road and another for a Morrisons in Munford Road - back in October.

At the time, councillors were told they had to either support plans for the Asda to the south of the town or the Morrisons to the north, but if both were approved they would cause too much damage to shops in the town centre.

Planning committee members initially voted to reject both applications because of the loss of employment land - but, they immediately voted to reverse their decision and deferred the item to a future meeting.

Both planning applications are now back on the agenda for Breckland Council's planning committee meeting on Monday.

The London Road site has once again been recommended for approval with the Mundford Road site looking set to be turned down.

In their report, planning officers have said the Mundford Road site would result in 'unacceptable cumulative impacts on the viability and vitality' of the town centre, and that this 'harm would not be outweighed by the benefits' of the development.
