Special guests and nominees are gearing up for an awards ceremony which is set to raise the high bar set by its inaugural event last year.

The Thetford Awards Recognising Achievement (TARAs) will bring together some of the town’s unsung heroes, from volunteers to community organisations to businesses, to gain recognition for the incredible deeds they do every week which go unrecognised.

From a public vote which saw hundreds of nominations come in, three nominees have been selected in six categories with more special awards to be presented on the night.

Set up by local businessman and councillor Mark Robinson, with support from the Times, the awards are a way to give something back to the generous people of Thetford who work hard to improve the town and the lives of its residents.

Mr Robinson said: “Friday night will be the culmination of months of hard work by many people.

“I am really excited to see the celebration of Thetford and all the positive aspects of it.”

The second awards ceremony is taking place at the Carnegie Room this Friday from 7pm, with a meal and live music for guests.

The evening will be hosted by Mark Jeffries and will feature an opening speech by South West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss.

Winners will be crowned in six categories including business, good neighbour and young person.

Among those presenting awards are Thetford mayor Terry Jermy, Breckland Council leader William Nunn, ITV Anglia presenter Becky Jago and Times editor Andrew Fitchett.
