Michelle Salter from Yaxham, near Dereham, and Reg McGuire, 65, from Bowthorpe, near Norwich, received certificates and badges during the Norfolk branch of armed forces charity SSAFA’s annual general meeting at Fakenham Racecourse.

SSAFA, established in 1885, provides lifelong support to anyone who is currently serving or has ever served in the Royal Navy, British Army or Royal Air Force along with their families.

SSAFA Norfolk chairman Stuart Fidler said: “These two people have done an absolutely wonderful job and, as a charity, we could certainly do with more like them.

“With what they have done it has almost become like a full-time job and this recognition is well deserved.”

Mrs Salter, who was made an MBE two years ago in recognition of her work with SSAFA, became involved with the charity because her husband Simon was in the army.

She said: “The people we help have been prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for us so it feels right that we go the extra mile for them.”

Mr McGuire, who was in the navy for 25 years, said: “I’ve worked on 16 cases in the last year and the work really varies.

“There are a lot more mental health issues to deal with now and the cases have become more and more complex.

“We are basically facilitators and we see the cases through, where ever they lead to, from A to Z. It is very rewarding work.”
