A high frying north Norfolk fish and chip shop missed out being named national champion today.

No 1 Cromer, on New Street did not claim the title when the chips were dealt for the The 2016 National Fish & Chip Award organised by Seafish.

It was plaiced amongst the runners up at a ceremony in London hosted by food expert Nigel Barden.

The Scallop Shell in Bath, was announced the winner from the five shortlisted finalists in the Restaurant of the Year category.

The fish and chip shop, which has been open for more than three years, is run by businessman and chef Galton Blackiston.

The shortlisted restaurants were visited by an awards auditor who assessed both front and back of house operational aspects of the businesses.

Isle of Ely Produce managing director John Boutwood won an award for his outstanding contribution to the fish frying industry.

He started out the Littleport based business more than 40 years ago selling potatoes to the trade. Despite a horrific car crash confining him to a wheel chair he battled through over a year’s treatment to restart the business.

Mr Boutwood and his son Oliver distribute over two million bags of potatoes to fish and chip shops across the UK and Ireland every year.

  • Has anybody else spotted paragraph 3? It says the chip shop was "placed" and not placed. Is this just a well thought out pun or a very bad spelling mistake?

  • Samphirelover. Hello there yes quite agree RE negative comments but if you look on the top hotel sites they to get negative comments it's the way we Brits are , same when you go on holiday I have had some brilliant holidays and added reviews to compliment and people on the same week or weeks give terrible reviews, I am just pleased like you say maybe lucky but if hit and miss then when I get the miss , then I will want to know why standards have dropped. All the best samphirelover.

  • I will never use a chip shop on the coast they are there to fleece the tourists, small portions and expensive prices, go inland and will certain get more for your money, years ago a fish and chip meal was the cheapest meal you could buy, but not nowadays you go to some, and cod and chips twice is around £12-£14, the fish prices may have gone up, but these chip shops buy 25kg bags of potatoes for around £5.50 with an approx 150 -160 potatoes in each bag and in an average portion of chips they use about 1-2 potatoes now work out the profit on one bag of potatoes when the chip shop charges between £1-£2 for portion of chips. estimated profit is high and some still moan about the price of a bag of potatoes.

  • For me the Grosvenor Fish Bar in Pottergate, Norwich is the best. Cod Goujan - not as small as it sounds - & Chips for £3.75 is excellent value with great fresh fish. The ambience is great too - cool music, seating in the 'air raid shelter chic' undercroft. Lovely owners - Duane and Christian - who are almost always there and great, enthusiastic staff. It's no wonder it is always at the top of Trip Advisor's Norwich restaurants.

  • In ration book 1950s when the chippie at West Earlham began the new potato season the news went shooting round the estate. Friday was egg and chip day and I was sent off with half a crown to get chips for our family of five. Began running home with a steaming bundle of fresh fried new spuds when horror! I tripped on the pavement, Down I went an watched as the chips spread themselves out. I wrapped them up and took them home. Dad finished his meal, turned to mum, licked his lips and proclaimed: 'That was beautiful. You could tell they were new potatoes, they were still a little gritty.' It was 40 years before I told mum what had happened.

  • @Mariner. It's not just people on here ... Take a look at Trip Advisor and there are some very negative comments on there. It's not easy to find as it comes under No1 Cromer and Ice Cromer. Mostly complaining about price, staff and quality. It seems it's very hit and miss there. It's just luck whether you catch it on a good or bad day.

  • We had relatives here from the Midlands and they tried No 1 and were very disappointed. Worst chips they'd ever had. Fish batter not good and greasy chips. They also had to point out to staff over the counter that the floor this side was covered in spilt chips and it was dangerous. the staff member just shrugged and in the 20 minutes they waited, the floor wasn't cleaned up.

  • The best fish and chips I have tasted ever came from Cromer's Cliftonville Hotel's Tom Bolton Restaurant, Fresh fish delivered daily, which the staff filleted - 'large cod for me, please' - and chips cooked to order. Irresistible. Cromer's best-kept secret.
