They were supposed to spread the word about a clairvoyant evening, but what has happened to a series of roadside advertising boards is a mystery, it seems, no-one can solve.

Members of the Paston Playground Project had put up about 20 boards to promote their charity night around their own village as well as Mundesley, Northrepps and North Walsham.

But over the past three weeks, nine of the boards, including all of the bigger ones, have gone missing from their positions.

Denise McKeough, group member, said she was shocked and frustrated at the disappearances.

She said: 'We have had about four or five of these events in the past two years and we've been putting up boards all this time. They've never gone missing before.

'We've checked over the hedges and the surrounding areas where they have been, but there's no sign of them.

'It's a real shock because we're only trying to raise money for our village.

'We've got no idea who's behind it.

'I just can't believe that someone could be so mean-spirited.'

Proceeds from the clairvoyant evening were to help pay for the now completed refurbishment of Paston's playground, which was officially re-opened in September after £40,000 worth of improvements.

Margaret Brett said taking the signs away served no purpose.

She said she had heard other groups had also had advertising boards go missing from their spots next to the roadside.

She said: 'Whoever is behind it is only taking away from villages and charities that are trying to raise money for good causes.

'It's not going into any big business pockets, it's just for local charities.

'It's very frustrating.

'We've gone to all this time and effort and then they start disappearing.'

Ms McKeough said they had not reported the disappearances to the police because they did not believe it was serious enough.

She asked anyone who knew wHere the boards were to email her at denise.mckeough@hotmail.co.uk.

The clairvoyant evening takes place at Mundesley Coronation Hall on Saturday, November 3, from 7pm.

Tickets are £10 in advance or £12 on the door.
