Fifty years ago tomorrow The Beatles’ first single, Love Me Do was released.

It’s been said that to increase sales, manager Brian Epstein ordered 10,000 copies himself, but even that could only push Love Me Do to number 17 in the charts.

But their next single Please Please Me topped the charts around the globe and in 1964 the Beatles conquered America.

The group played several times in our region performing in Norwich at the Grosvenor Rooms in Prince of Wales Road on May 17, 1963. They twice played in Great Yarmouth at the ABC Cinema, on June 30, 1963 and July 28 in the same year. They also performed at the Gaumont in Ipswich on May 22, 1963 and October 31, 1964, and at the Cambridge Regal on November 26, 1963.

By the time the group split in 1970 they had sold millions of records worldwide and had changed the world. The group are just as popular now as they have ever been, and several events are being planned to mark the 50th anniversary.

As part of the celebrations, we are asking readers to choose their favourite Beatles’ songs in our poll.
