Parents and pupils have been warned to be on their guard after a teenage girl was grabbed by a man in a mid-Norfolk village.

The 15-year-old girl was walking along Lexham Road in Litcham, between Dereham and Swaffham, at about 8pm yesterday.

She had gone past The Bull pub when she became aware of a man walking behind her. The man grabbed her by the arm, causing her to fall over. The girl then got up and ran away. She was said to be left shaken but unharmed.

The man was seen to get into a dark-coloured Land Rover and drive off towards Mileham.

He is described as white, in his 20s, about 5ft 8in tall, and with stubble. He was wearing a light-coloured, hooded top and jogging bottoms.

Litcham School headteacher Jim Adams sent out a letter to parents today, warning them and their children to be vigilant. He also spoke to pupils at the school.

Mr Adams said: “We would like to reassure parents that this kind of incident is very rare but that we are working with the police and the wider community to take all possible measures in ensuring that children at our school remain safe.

“I have written to parents and asked them to reiterate advice to their children about being vigilant and staying safe outside school when they are not accompanied by an adult and we will be reinforcing this message in school over the coming weeks.”

Suzi Olley, whose two children are at the school, said she was “shocked” to have heard what happened and has warned fellow parents on Facebook.

She said: “Parents have to be on their guard - you don’t know where this person will go next and how seriously they will attempt to do something.”

Anyone who has any relevant information is asked to contact PC Matt Harris at Dereham Police Station on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
