Grants totalling £38,000 have now been handed out to a number of deserving people and community projects across Waveney by the Taylor High Memorial Fund, which was launched less than three years ago.

When Taylor’s family established the charitable fund after the 19-year-old’s death in a road crash in west Norfolk in March 2011, they were unaware of the huge response it would generate.

But since launching the fund, his parents Elaine and Gary High have been amazed by people’s generosity. Dozens of events have been organised in support of the appeal and, with fundraising stepped up over the festive season, more than £42,500 has now been collected. All but £4,500 has been distributed.

Mrs High said: “We are helping local deserving people within a 20-mile radius of Lowestoft. Our family would like to thank everyone who makes it possible for us to help others through the legacy of our son Taylor.”

The most recent beneficiary was the Shine Youth project in Kirkley. Set up by the YMCA in 2011, the project provides a weekly youth club for about 30 young people aged between eight and 20.

Mr and Mrs High visited the club in St John’s Road to present a cheque for £760 after being contacted by Shine Youth project worker Kay Westgate, who asked the fund for help to support for its work.

Mrs High said: “Fundraising activity was stepped up over the Christmas period with street collections, tombolas, raffles and also a donation from an event at Code Hair Beauty Secrets – which brings the total raised to £42,500.”
