The manager of a Swaffham chippy has been shortlisted for the national Young Fish Frier of the Year Award.
Matthew Martin has managed Mother Hubbard’s, which his father owns, since he was 16 and was one of five people selected following a cook off in Leeds.
The judges tested contestants’ knowledge of the preparation and cooking of fish and chips, health and safety and customer service.
Mr Martin said: “My dad has owned Mother Hubbard’s for almost two decades and I remember being four years old, perched on some potatoes watching my dad work and I knew growing up, I wanted to work within the industry.
“Not only is this a massive achievement for myself, but I know my family is proud of me and I think it is important to get more young people involved in the fish and chips industry as it is a British institution and something that we should take pride in.”
Judges will now visit the shop head of the awards ceremony in London on January 24, 2013.
