The man, aged 30, fled after being seen by officers in the town at around 4.20pm.

The National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter from Boreham in Essex was called into action as part of the search. The NPAS Boreham Twitter account stated that an “extensive area” had been cleared.

But it is believed the man managed to evade officers by making off on a bicycle into woodland near to Chestnut Close.

He is described as white and around 5ft 9in tall.
