Norfolk’s police and crime commissioner Stephen Bett has called on the county’s MPs, councillors and communities to make a stand against hate by backing the campaign set up by the Hate Free Norfolk Network which has replaced the multi-agency protocol on hate crime or MAP.

Mr Bett said: “The idea behind the Hate Free Norfolk Pledge is very simple, but has the potential to make a real difference in our county.

“By signing up to the Pledge, organisations, community groups and individuals can send the message that hate will not be tolerated here.”

The pledge is officially launched this week and consists of a set of seven commitments that supporters can sign up to in order to work together for a Hate Free Norfolk.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service and Norfolk County Council are backing the new campaign, with chief fire officer Nigel Williams, area manager Stuart Horth and county council cabinet member for public protection Dan Roper due to sign it at Carrow Fire Station today.

Mr Williams said: “I am signing the Hate Free Norfolk Pledge both on behalf of NFRS and as an individual who is committed to making Norfolk hate free.

“I would therefore urge everyone to consider backing the campaign by signing the Hate Free Norfolk Pledge.”

CPS East of England is also backing the campaign to raise awareness and tackle hate crime in Norfolk – with Chief Crown Prosecutor Grace Ononiwu supporting the Hate Free Norfolk Pledge.

Ms Ononiwu said: “As the chief crown prosecutor for the east of England, I welcome and endorse the launch of the Hate Free Norfolk Pledge.”
