A heritage railway is preparing to bring some superstars of the steam world to Norfolk to boost the line’s visitor appeal through the summer months.

The Mid Norfolk Railway (MNR), which operates between Dereham and Wymondham, has secured the services of the Gresley Society’s N2 tank locomotive number 1744 to handle the majority of the line’s steam services this year.

The 1921-built engine is due to arrive at the end of May for its second visit to the MNR, staying on the railway until the end of August.

A spokesman for the MNR said: “The class were known for suburban work out of King’s Cross and Moorgate and the compact, yet powerful locomotive will be perfectly suited to MNR services.”

And the MNR has also announced an extra, one-off summer event – the West Coast Railways gala, in partnership with West Coast Railways.

Running from Friday May 30 until Sunday June 1, the special timetable will feature West Coast Railway Company steam locos, with scheduled visitors including LMS Royal Scot 46115 “Scots Guardsman”, LMS Jubilee 45699 “Galatea”, and either a Stanier 8F or a Black 5 to complete the line-up.

The MNR spokesman said: “It should not be under-estimated just how truly unique this event is; apart from a single visit many years ago, the West Coast fleet of steam locos, has never featured at any heritage railways, until now.”

None of these steam locomotives is a type which would have worked in Norfolk during the days of steam, being normally associated with the Midlands and northern parts of Great Britain.

  • I hope Network Rail approve as they stopped Gresley's A4 going to Sheringham.
