You may have seen Batman and Robin riding a tandem bike on your travels across Norfolk.

The two superheroes, also known as Phil Berry and Andrew Heginbotham, have cycled 350 miles to visit all 42 of the county's fire stations.

By day the dynamic duo are firefighters and decided the ride was the best way to say thank you and goodbye to their colleagues before they retire at the end of this month.

The pair currently work for Norfolk Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) where Mr Heginbotham is group manager of USAR at the county's fire service headquarters in Wymondham and Mr Berry is station manager at Dereham.

And not only were they cycling to bid their colleagues farewell, they were raising money for the road safety charity Brake and The Fire Fighters Charity.

They also held collections for Tunnels for Towers who are helping James Thorpe the King's Lynn firefighter who was left paralysed on his stag-do.

Mr Heginbotham, who is 54 and lives in Attleborough, said: 'The reception in the villages and the fire stations and the communities in general has been fantastic.

'We are very grateful and it has been a humbling experience.'

Kicking off their trek in King's Lynn – where the pair first met in 1992 – on Monday, they spent the rest of the day visiting stations in west Norfolk.

The remaining days were broken into north Norfolk, Great Yarmouth and Norwich, and yesterday the south where they received a police motorcycle escort into Thetford fire station.

Mr Berry, 51 and who lives in Thwaite, said: 'This is a great way to say goodbye and I hope we have done justice to the support we have had throughout our careers. 'I wish them all safe careers.'

As they stopped off at different fire stations, the pair were also taking part in a number of activities to raise awareness of safety - including testing smoke detectors and road safety.

The pictures were uploaded onto the fire services' social media pages to get the messages across.

'It has been great,' added Mr Berry. 'The encouragement we have had has been second to none. Not just from the fire service but the police and the ambulance service.

'What has been amazing is seeing people smile all along the route. People have laughed.'
