A celebration of Yarmouth’s cultural diversity will enliven St George’s Plaza later this month.

The ‘2gether as 1’ event, outside St George’s Theatre from 2pm to 7pm on August 30, aims to promote community cohesion, with local people from all cultural backgrounds invited to take part. It is being organised by the Portuguese Speakers Network Great Yarmouth (PSNGY) and is the first major event the group has held since it was formed in January.

As well as food from around the world, there will be dancing from African group Afroluso and Portuguese troupe San Tome and a circus act from SeaChange Arts.

Aurelio Spinola, PSNGY chairman, said: “The aim of the ‘2gether as 1’ event is to bring together residents of all cultural background, from across the borough, to have some fun and celebrate our diversity and traditions.

“It also makes use of St George’s Plaza, which is a fantastic space for alfresco entertainment. If it is a success, hopefully we can have a summer party like this every year.”

Trevor Wainwright, leader of Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said: “Not only does it have a worthy ethos, but all proceeds from the event will go to the Pathway Café and Support Centre, based at the Minster Mission, which provides hot food and support for marginalised people in the community of South Yarmouth.”
