Sub-perb effort from Norwich students who triumphed in sandwich contest

A sandwich designed by Norwich students is on shelves across the region, after it triumphed in a regional contest.
The Norwich High School for Girls group entered their sub - the Big Barbecue Fill-It - into Subway’s Design a Sub competition, which asked budding entrepreneurs from schools and colleges to design a new sandwich.
On Thursday, the winning team - made up of Amy Ackroyd, Akshaya Khurana, Megan Wicks and Jessica Potter - were invited to their local Subway store, on Rampant Horse Street, to see their design turned into reality.
For the rest of the month, the sandwich - filled with chicken, barbecue sauce and salad on Italian white bread - will be on sale in Subway stores across the east of England.
Miss Khurana said: “After all of our hard work, it’s amazing that our Sub has gone on sale in Subway stores.
“The process has given us all great experience and we had so much fun throughout the whole of the Design a Sub competition.”
They beat competition from almost 100 other teams around the region, and became one of six finalists to pitch their sub idea to a Dragon’s Den style panel.
Jane Wells, head of Business Studies and Economics at the school, said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed getting to grips with the Design a Sub competition.
“It gave them a fantastic opportunity to put the business and marketing skills they are learning into practice and they all did a great job. Taking part in the Design a Sub competition has been a fantastic experience for them.
“Winning the competition is a brilliant achievement and excellent reward for all their hard work - we are very proud of their efforts.”
Joe La Bella, Subway entrepreneur and franchisee, congratulated the team and said they “truly deserve” their win.
“The Subway franchise is made up of thousands of entrepreneurs and it’s great if we can pass on some of our knowledge to the younger generation, who may even consider franchising as an option for owning their own business,” he said.
“We hope customers enjoy the Big BBQ Fill-It Sub as much as we do.”
