There was a high police presence in Dereham today as a “walk of respect for Drummer Lee Rigby”, the soldier who was killed on a London street on May 22, went through the town.

Organised in part by members of the far-right English Defence League, people walked from Dereham library to the war memorial at the opposite end of the town, where flowers were laid.

It is estimated about 15 police officers were on patrol in the town, as well as two public order vans with nine officers on stand-by.

Norfolk police stopped traffic at the memorial so flowers could be laid and said there were no reported problems during the event.

And it was a peaceful march through Lowestoft town centre, with no more than 15-20 people/EDL members present.

Mayor of Lowestoft Nick Webb, who was in the town centre for a Pride of Lowestoft showcase day to highlight the cadets and youth organisations in the town as part of a recruitment drive, said: “It was a peaceful protest.”

There was a police presence, as the march made it way through the town centre to eventually arrive at the Lowestoft War Memorial, on Royal Plain, where flowers and flags were laid in memory of Lee Rigby.

One of the messages read: “To a true hero never forgotten.”
