Her outspoken views as a politician may have thrust her into the limelight.

But it was her turn on the Strictly Come Dancing stage which saw the public really take Ann Widdecombe into their hearts.

Now people in Beccles will be able to hear first-hand about her life when she visits the town for a one-off evening on Wednesday, July 30.

Organised by Blyburgate business Kulture Shock, Miss Widdecombe will entertain guests at the Waveney Centre, giving an insight into her colourful career as a government minister in three departments and the shadow cabinet under John Major and William Hague.

Her controversial views, childhood and her work as a novelist will also be discussed, as well as her television appearances, which inspired the title of her autobiography Strictly Ann.

In 2010, after retiring from politics during the general election, she made the bold move to take part in Strictly Come Dancing, where she was partnered with Anton Du Beke. She lasted nine weeks, receiving mass support from the television audience and went on to take part in the tour.

Her talk will be followed by a question and answer session, and afterwards Miss Widdecombe will be signing copies of her best-selling books, including Strictly Ann.

David Crothers, owner of Kulture Shock in Beccles, said he was delighted to be able to attract Miss Widdecombe to Beccles.

“We did a signing with Ann a few years ago and we were looking to do something to support our independent shops in Beccles, so we got in touch with her again.

“The last time we did an event with Ann it was a complete sell-out. She is completely charismatic. Forget anything you think you know about her, as she’s a completely different person to what you have seen in her political life; she’s very much a strictly girl.”

Tickets are £5 each, or if you buy Strictly Ann, or any of her novels from Kulture Shock, the ticket for the 7pm event is free. Call 01502 712922.
