St Helen’s Church on Gurney Road marked its 40 years with cake sales, children’s games and a visit from the Bishop of Norwich, Graham James.

On Saturday, the church held a scarecrow competition with winning entries from Costessey Guides, Costessey Junior School, Peter Taylor Funeral Services and Costessey Infants. On Sunday, the Bishop of Norwich attended with former vicars of the church – Chris Collison, John Bourne and Tim Sedgley – for a service of thanksgiving.

A birthday cake depicting St Helen’s east window was also cut.

Reverend Nicholas Parry said: “It was a wonderful occasion, celebrating 40 years was absolutely wonderful.”

Money was raised over the weekend through cake stalls and homemade produce sales.

Visitors also enjoyed a display of the history of St Helen’s Church.

The £320 raised will go towards a new roof for the church hall.

Fundraisers are hoping to get around £40,000 for the new roof to replace the current one, which leaks.

Their efforts received a boost from Kettle Chips last week, who gave them £500.

The total fund now stands at around £12,000.

To donate to the new roof fund contact Reverend Nicholas Parry on 01603 742818.
