A new face on the team at a hospice is keen to spread the word about the charity’s work and meet as many people in the community as possible.

Miranda McCoy is St Nicholas Hospice Care’s new Community Fundraiser, charged with raising funds and awareness.

She joins the Hospice after more than 15 years working for the Big Lottery Fund, and steps into the shoes of previous Community Fundraiser Sue Long, who retired at the end of last year.

She said: “Since joining the Hospice, no two days have been the same, which I absolutely love. My role involves supporting people with fund-raising events for the Hospice across the patch of West Suffolk and South Norfolk, including Bury St Edmunds, Brandon, Thetford, Mildenhall, Newmarket and all the villages in between.

“I have already met some wonderful people, including fund-raisers and supporters, volunteers, patients, carers, families, nurses and staff.”

Miranda has started working on forthcoming fundraising events, given talks and received cheques on behalf of the Hospice, but she is keen to meet as many people as possible as she settles into her new role.

“This is a wonderful change for me,” she said. “In my last job I was giving money away, but now I have to work hard to bring it in. I’m learning so much and, funnily enough, this job involves a lot of talking which is something that I am good at.”

The Hospice looks after people with terminal and life-shortening illnesses, including cancer, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, and the advanced stages of Parkinson’s and heart and lung disease. Every day, £11,000 has to be raised through the generosity of the local community.

“This year, the Hospice is celebrating its 30th anniversary and I hope more people than ever will think about supporting us,” added Ms McCoy.
