The town’s mayor, Sylvia Armes, was on hand on Monday to declare the new St Nicholas Hospice Care shop on Riverside Walk open.

Town crier, Mike Wabe, also helped to open the store with a specially written proclamation.

Susanne Dickson, hospice retail field support officer, said the opening was a “dream come true”, after the shop moved from its previous home in Bridge Street.

“We have been looking for new premises in Thetford for the last six years. We’ve been looking for something bigger than our existing shop, which is very small, and we also want to raise our profile in the town - many people did not know the Hospice had a shop in Thetford.

Town Crier’s proclamation

Oyez, oyez, oyez!

All good citizens draw near and hearken to these words.

In nineteen hundred and eighty four

St Nicholas Hospice Care opened its door.

To celebrate this ‘versary of pearls,

They’re selling a necklace for the girls.

A shop in Thetford can be seen

For more than 20 years has been.

Now they’ve moved to premises new,

So gentle folks, come form a queue.

The Hospice provides advice and care,

And those who’ve had it really swear

How good it is, and friendly too.

Open to all, that’s me and you.

Come inside, don’t be shy,

Spend some money and you’ll buy

Things you want, and you’ll aid

Those in need, don’t be afraid.

So come, support this worthy cause

As this new shop opens its doors.

So look, and listen, and take heed,

The Hospice is there in your time of need.

“Our new premises in Riverside Walk are a lot bigger and more prominent – it is the main place for charity shops in the town. We hope the shop will generate more funds for the Hospice,” she said.

Pre-loved donated clothes, bric a brac and household items will be available at the shop, with good quality donations welcome during opening hours.

The shop will open Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm.

According to the charity, the Bridge Street shop closed on 26 July and will remain shut for a few weeks, before re-opening as a store selling donated CDs, DVDs and vinyl records.
