A former Fakenham mayor and respected community stalwart is to be remembered in a new competition in the town.

Brenda Coldrick, who was well-known for her tireless voluntary work, died in March 2012, aged 73, after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Traders in Fakenham are to compete against one another at the Fakenham Shopkeepers' Olympics, in April, and it has just been announced that they will be battling to win the Brenda Coldrick Cup.

They will participate in a range of fun and not too serious challenges including street tug of war, the grand inflatable golf challenge, gym triathlon, rugby skills, military circuits, garden games, the Fakenham Junior School challenge, soccer skills, table tennis and more.

The cup has been donated by Ms Coldrick's family to Active Fakenham, which is organising the competition.

Richard Crook, Ms Coldrick's nephew, who is co-ordinator of Active Fakenham and a town councillor, said: 'Brenda was a hard-working and respected town and district councillor, a committed Labour Party member and feminist.

'She had a great sense of humour and fun; this event would have been right up her street.'

Ms Coldrick's eldest daughter, Amanda Coldrick, said: 'I am sure my mum would have loved these events. I hope everyone has a great time. We are all looking forward to it.'

Her other daughter, Jenny Coldrick added: 'Brenda was a much-loved Fakenham resident who devoted much of her time to supporting community events.'

Ms Coldrick was chairman of trustees for Citizens Advice North Norfolk and prior to that, of the Fakenham and Wells branch of the Citizens Advice Bureau, before the organisation was restructured.

She has also volunteered for Fakenham charity First Focus and has represented Fakenham on North Norfolk District Council.

Ms Coldrick was on Fakenham Town Council until her death.

The Fakenham Shopkeepers' Olympics will be part of the Fakenham Showcase Day taking place in the centre of town from 10am until 1pm on April 19. More details will be announced soon.
