A 'spoof' Norfolk County Council email account is being used to try to con people out of cash, watchdogs have warned.

Norfolk Trading Standards says the scam email, purporting to be from a county council address, claims to be notification of a refund from Her Majesties Revenue & Customs.

The email states that 'HM Revenue & Customs has recalculate (sic) your annual fiscal activity' and you are 'eligible to receive a tax refund'. The email goes on to offer a link to 'claim your refund'.

A spokesman for Norfolk Trading Standards said: 'If you receive one of these messages it is a scam. Do not click on any links or open attachments.'

They said HMRC would never notify people of a tax rebate or offer of replayment by email.

And they stressed the county council has no connection to the emails and do not send emails on behalf of HMRC.
