Led by Philip Shryane of St Mary’s in Great Yarmouth, a service saw military personnel and flag bearers observe as the flag was hoisted up the mast.

He said: “It’s important we remember those who served in the military and those who still do, protecting our nation and bringing peace.”

Among those present were representatives from the Great Yarmouth branch of the Royal British Legion.

Kerry Robinson-Payne, mayor of the Great Yarmouth borough did the honours, with the flag bearing a message of support for the armed forces.

She said: “Events like this really make you realise how people sacrificed their lives for us all and still do. I’m very proud to have raised the flag, which I hope will make sure people reflect and appreciate what these people do for us all.”
