A south Norfolk museum’s growing collection of Dad’s Army vehicles has welcomed a new arrival, which was the star of the 1971 film.

The 1934 Shelvoke Drewery Dustcart, which now has pride of place at Bressingham Steam Museum, appeared in the scene where Captain Mainwaring and his men hitch a lift back to Walmington-on-Sea in the dustcart following a disastrous weekend exercise.

The Bressingham museum’s collection now has six vehicles associated with the film or the famous comedy series of the same name, including Lance Cpl Jack Jones’ butcher’s van, a vintage Leyland fire engine, an Austin 8 staff car and two steam traction engines.

Phillip Rooke, a curator at the museum, said: “It adds to what we have already got and is another attraction for visitors when they get here. It increases our Dad’s Army collection and is another addition to the Walmington-on-Sea display.”

The tiller-steered yellow vehicle has been loaned to the museum by the Southern Counties Historic Vehicles Preservation Trust, having been used as a dustcart by Epsom and Ewell Council.

However, when the vehicle was withdrawn from service, the council decided to place the dustcart in storage instead of sending it to be scrapped.

Eventually, the building it was stored in was to be demolished and the vehicle was offered to a group of enthusiasts from Worthing in the 1960s, long before the concept of preserving commercial vehicles had become established.

This group is now known as the preservation trust, which has lent the cart to the museum.

Many of the outdoor scenes in Dad’s Army were filmed in the vicinity of Thetford.
