A 41-year-old man was hit on the head with a bottle in Beccles and then attacked as he lay on the ground.
The victim was walking with a friend in London Road at about 1.50am on Saturday when they became aware they were being followed by two men, who police say may have been soldiers.
As they approached the junction with Alexandra Road one of the two men called out, causing the 41-year-old to turn around.
As the man turned he was struck on the head with a bottle.
He fell to the ground and was then attacked by one of the men.
The offender was pulled off the 41-year-old by the other man and both men ran away.
The 41-year-old made his way to Beccles Police Station where he was seen by officers and checked over by ambulance personnel.
He suffered a graze to his head and swelling to his eyes and nose.
The assault suspect was white, in his 20s, between 5ft 9in and 6ft and had an athletic build.
The other man was white, in his 20s, was more than 6ft and had an athletic build with fair hair that was short at the back and sides.
It is thought that both men are members of the military, possibly the Army, due to the language they used.
Anyone with information should call Waveney CID on 101.
