The soap box derby comes rolling into Hunstanton this weekend.

Thousands will line the streets of the seaside town on Sunday to see more than 50 home made karts race from Boston Square to The Green.

Daredevils will take to the bumpy streets in two races starting at 12-noon and 2.30pm.

Entertainment begins at 10.30am, with music on The Green from Sam Cook, Morganway and battle of the band winners Dishy Tangent through out the day. A gin tent opens at 11am.

There will also be a Morris Minor display and children’s entertainment with the Strange Fascination Theatre.

The teams will be competing in age categories of under-13, under-16, adult, and veteran. The fastest team in each category will be presented with their trophies on stage on The Green at 4.45pm, by Geoff Hipperson, deputy borough mayor; Amanda Bosworth, mayor of Hunstanton; Elizabeth Nockolds, borough council deputy leader, and Paul Searle, representing the main race sponsor, Searles Leisure Resort.

Mrs Nockolds said: “Last year’s soap box derby was the highlight of our programme of events happening as part of our project to regenerate the Hunstanton Heritage Gardens, and this year’s event looks set to be even bigger and better. We’ve got teams coming from far and wide to compete, so I hope as many people as possible will come along to cheer them on and join the fun. I’m looking forward to judging the concours d’elegance competition, there were some incredible karts last year, so I’ll have a tough decision to make!”

Roger Partridge, activities coordinator for the Hunstanton Heritage Gardens, said: “We’ve been working very hard to make this an outstanding event, and I’d like to thank everyone who’s joining in: Searles the main race sponsor, the King’s Lynn and District Motor Club who will be bringing their expertise to the timing of the races, and the King’s Lynn police cadets who’ll be assisting with the marshalling, and of course all the staff and volunteers behind the scenes. Our winners from the adult and junior categories last year are both back to race again, as well as lots of new teams, so it’s sure to be competitive. We have a full day of free entertainment planned, so come along to sunny Hunny and join us.”

To accommodate the event, road closures will be in place on September, 23 from 7am to 7pm in Boston Square and Cliff Parade. There will also be no parking in those roads from 12:01am to 7pm.
