Residents in Sheringham have breathed a sigh of relief after vital mobile signal was restored to the town last week.

The problems began after a mast, serving Vodafone users in the area, was dismantled from the former fire station site on the Cromer Road during October to make way for the new Tesco store.

Sheringham councillor Richard Smith said he welcomed the news.

“This saga has dragged on for far too long,” he said. “Communication by Vodafone has been severely lacking and lessons need to be learned to ensure a significant outage such as this doesn’t happen again.

“I will continue to monitor the signal,”

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb added: “It has been incredibly frustrating for Sheringham residents to be without phone signal for such a long period of time - people will be very glad this finally seems to be resolved.”

A new base station has been built on land adjacent to St Andrews Close, and has replaced the coverage since the work was completed to link the new site into the network.

Rob Matthews, Vodafone unit manager, said: “Once again, we apologise to our customers in parts of the Sheringham that may have been affected during the recent loss of coverage.

“I can confirm that coverage was restored on November 12 and we have been monitoring the site to ensure that coverage remains stable.”

A spokesman for Vodafone added that if customers were without coverage for three days or more they could claim a refund of the proportion of line rental for the period that the coverage had been lost by contacting customer services by ringing 191 on their mobile.
