The new Morrisons in Postmill Close, off Norwich Road, has provided 179 new jobs for the town, including 47 for people who were previously unemployed.

It was opened this morning by colleagues from Sue Ryder, Morrisons national charity partner, and town mayor Colin Foulger.

Queues formed early, with most arriving between 8am and 9am - although some claimed to have met a man who grabbed his place in the line at 1am.

The “medium-sized” store will include new misting technology to keep food fresh, as well as a continental style deli counter, 140 cuts of meat in the butchery and more than 80 cheeses from around the world.

Alan Kitchin, store general manager, said: “We wanted to create an experience that was different from other supermarkets, offering customers a fantastic range of fresh products at great value and excellent customer service.

“We’re delighted that, as a result of this new store opening, we have helped create new jobs in the local area, and are now looking forward to welcoming new shoppers into our Wymondham store.”

Joe Mooney, County Councillor for Wymondham, said “The whole store looks fantastic and the range goods on offer were of very high quality.

“From the conversations that I had with the shoppers they appear to be very supportive of what they saw. They like me are very pleased that this new exciting store has opened in our town.”

Although Wymondham currently has a Waitrose in Norwich Road, it has lacked one of the so-called ‘big four’ supermarkets - Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.

In 2012, planning permission for the Morrisons was granted by South Norfolk Council at a special meeting, held after a string of public consultations.
