A Norfolk town crier has something to shout about after snatching second place from under the noses of the locals at a competition in Devon.
Tony Nelson from Sheringham was named runner-up at the contest during the 26th Topsham Town Fayre thanks to a “free cry” that told a tale about his namesake and Norfolk hero Lord Nelson.
Mr Nelson said: “We were allowed to choose our own subject and tell it in 100 to 150 words. I decided on the general subject of Norfolk and finishing with a famous story about Nelson when he was being offered the freedom of the Borough of Great Yarmouth after the Battle of the Nile.
“He put his left hand on the Bible when taking the oath and, on being asked where his right hand was, he answered: ‘In Tenerife’.”
Mr Nelson said most of the competitors were from Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.
