CCTV cameras in a coastal town look set to be reinstated this month after fears the system would be lost because of council cost-cutting measures.

The six new cameras, replacing older versions across Sheringham will be set up over the next two weeks.

It is hoped the town council will be able to officially take control of the cameras and the technology will be switched on after the work is finished, according to a council meeting last night.

The council is one of three town councils taking over the running of the surveillance system after North Norfolk District Council scrapped its CCTV technology in October last year to save £200,000 per year.

North Walsham and Fakenham town councils also agreed to take on the cameras in their respective communities. Cromer and Wells did not take on the cameras because of running costs.

The Three Towns CCTV Group asked the district council for £90,000 to pay for the costs of reconfiguring the system to Secure Defence UK. It accepted an offer of £50,318.

All three towns will take on financial responsibilities for the cameras. The six North Walsham cameras will be switched on later this month or early next month.
