Three lifeboats and a clutch of coastguards searched land and sea today after an emergency call that turned out to be a false alarm.
Sheringham lifeboat was joined by Cromer’s inshore and offshore boats between East Runton and Cromer after Humber coastguard requested their launch at 11.44am in the wake of a call from a member of the public.
The person reported seeing a red flare, thought to be in the nearshore zone, in heavy seas with a 2m swell.
A Sheringham lifeboat spokesman said: “The lifeboats and coastguard units did a thorough search of the area and nothing was found. The coastguard stood the lifeboats down at 12.30pm.”
