Pantomime time has put a smile on the face of theatre bosses as well as audiences at Sheringham.

The Jack and the Beanstalk production at the Little Theatre was seen by 6,003 people this winter, well up on the 5,686 who watched last year’s festive show.

Audiences were running at 88pc capacity, up on last year’s 72pc , and takings were up from £63,500 to £69,000, said theatre director Debbie Thompson who was delighted at the figures during a tough time for the entertainment industry.

“Things are not easy and audience figures for our summer repertory drama season were down slightly, so we were a bit worried - but this has given everyone a real buzz,” she added.

The theatre was also pleased with a rave review in the national Stage magazine which described it as the “very model of a modern panto.”

“Last year’s show was good, which helps with bookings, but the feedback about this year also brought in more people,” said Mrs Thompson.

The panto was written and co-directed by West End star Killian Donnelly, and talks were already under way with him about next year’s show.

●Auditions for singers and dancers aged eight to 25 to appear in the venue’s community production of Annie at Easter are being held at the theatre this Sunday at 10am.
