Written by Moss Hart and George S Kaufman, it is described as a rollicking tale of three down and out troupers who head for Hollywood in the 1920s and try their luck with the newly invented talkies.

Due to a series of chance encounters, hilarious blunders and outrageous coincidence, George – the most innocent of the three – is carried to pinnacles of fame and fortune.

The production is full of glitz and glamour, and it showcases a large ensemble cast of 23 actors and two dogs.

Director Rob Little said: “Once in a Lifetime is a play that I have great affection with. It is set in the most glamorous and exciting times during Hollywood’s history, when there were real stars.

“It also has a great sense of parody and fun that is timeless. On a personal note, the play was directed by Henry Burke (founder of Sewell Barn Theatre), where I was given my first leading role, George Lewis, over 30 years ago now!”

Mr Little said the show had a history of producing some home-grown talent.

About 10 years ago Mr Little put on a production of the show at the University of East Anglia with a cast that included future Oscar nominee Tom Bidwell as well as future Bafta nominee and Doctor Who star Matt Smith.

Mr Little said: “It is with great excitement that the Barn presents this latest version with a truly wonderful cast, who have worked so hard for the company.

“We hope that you get lots of fun and enjoyment watching the performance. I wonder who among them will go on to bigger and better things?”

• Once in a Lifetime is at Sewell Barn Theatre, in Constitution Hill, Norwich, tonight and tomorrow, and also from February 26 until March 1. Performances at 7.30pm and there is also a matinee performance on Saturday, March 1 at 2.30pm.
